What The Bible Says About Lying
From the time we're children we are taught (let's hope we're taught) that lying is wrong. We need to speak words of truth.
Lying leads us into a web of deceit that's hard to get out of once we get into it. A lie is told and then we have to tell other lies in order to cover up for the first lie. And before we know it, we can't remember what lie was told to whom.
But the truth is quite the opposite. While truth might not always be easy to take, it is what we should choose, regardless of the consequences.
(John 8:32 NKJV) "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
The truth will bring freedom to our lives, even if it might also bring pain. If we hold onto truth, it will cause the lies to die and fall away from us.
The Bible is pretty clear that it is wrong to lie, regardless of any situation or circumstance:
(Leviticus 19:11 NKJV) 'You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another.
(Exodus 20:16 NKJV) "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
Lying has many consequences. They can range from small and seemingly insignificant, to very major and life-changing. As mentioned previously, telling any lie will usually result in needing to tell further lies to cover your tracks, leading the lying person into a web of lies.
Ultimately, any person who chooses to lie will get caught and their world will come crashing down.
Here's a very strong verse about lying. The Bible goes so far as to include liars in a list of things that God hates.
(Proverbs 6:16-19 NKJV) These six things the LORD hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: {17} A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, {18} A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, {19} A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.
And how about this one:
(Proverbs 12:19 NKJV) The truthful lip shall be established forever, But a lying tongue is but for a moment.
Lastly, take a look at what is said in the book of Revelation about liars:
(Revelation 21:8 NKJV) "But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."
So it's safe to say that lying is not acceptable to God. Remember... it's the truth that sets us free.
